Toyota Automatic Transmission Fluid Type T-IV

Automatic Transmission is comprised of three sections called the torque converter, planetary and hydraulic control unit. Automatic transmission fluid does the following:

• Acts as a medium for transmitting the torque converter power

• Lubricates the gears, bearings, and clutch in the planetary gear unit

• Plays an important role as the hydraulic fluid of the hydraulic control unit

The torque converter is especially sensitive to viscosity and the clutch disc is especially sensitive to friction characteristics, so using a fluid of inferior quality will interfere with smooth connections, causing slipping or wearing to occur. A good ATF will have the following properties:

• Proper viscosity

• Proper coefficient of friction

• Good low temperature fluidity

• Excellent oxidation stability

When ATF has deteriorated, seizures are likely to happen in contact parts of the gear or clutch and may lead to malfunctions and accidents. ATF changing interval is recommended at 40,000km or 2 years whichever comes first to keep the automatic transmission in good condition.
